Walk it Off (What to Do When the Creativity Gets Muddy)

Newsletter AND Podcast

Newsletter Portion

Hey - I’m in flux still with my newsletter (obviously), and I am working on that, but I wanted to get back to sending a newsletter once a week. If you have thoughts on email platforms, let me know in the comments.

What I’ve been doing lately: walking, writing, revising, podcasting, spending time with family and celebrating family birthdays and events, reading, meeting with two author groups (online and in person) plus working a bit, and helping my elderly parents.

Books I’ve read this last week (always remember I read eclectically in genre, age group, etc): No Man Left Behind by Jemi Fraser (spicy Romantic Suspense) that I loved because of the awesome story, the beautiful and loving community Jemi has created for her characters, and because she did the right research for her main character who has a below knee prosthetic leg — this matters to me greatly because my dad has a below knee prosthetic leg and I felt like “finally” someone got it really right (so thank you, Jemi). Also, you can never go wrong having a main character/hero type character with a disability if you have taken the time to do the research. And then I read two mainstream, big trad novels I will not name because I’m just not excited about them (this means they were 3-star or less reads for me), and I started reading The Healthy Writer by Joanna Penn, adding that to my massive, ongoing nonfiction pile of books - I will finish them, I will. (but not today)

Worlds and Words I’m Developing: I’m working on a content revision for a top secret novella for a pen name this week, but also going over notes for Dark Blade Tempered (book 2), because I’m moving from one project to the other for February.

For my Becoming a Healthy Writer Goal, I’m working on adding in more intervals of movement this week. I feel best (like less chronic pain and more energy) when I do a bunch of 5-10 minute exercise sessions, so I am adding in more. So far, so good.

For my Creative Visibility Writer Goal, I’m still working at my podcast and video content. If you’re interested, you can check out my podcast below and some of the links below that.

Notes on the Podcast

In this podcast episode, I discuss something I rediscovered today - sometimes, I need to walk off the messy, muddy moments in creativity when things just don't seem right. Fresh air and movement can be the cure when we hit a creative wall, or get stuck in a muddy spot.
